The Game Box

My mother taught me cribbage at an early age and it's one of those games that takes a long time to master. 

She would say:

"It's what you throw into the crib that really matters".
"Destroy your hand if you have too, but do not give them a 15-2 or 7's and 8's"
...there are others...

We would play hand after hand and the back and forth.  The pegging.  I sometimes think it's one of those pure games where, when played with the right person, really shines.

She also tried to teach me 500.  It worked and I thought it was incredible.  I then started to read Hoyle and asked about Pinochle and Bridge.  My grandparents played Pinochle but Bridge was somehow just beyond them.  Guys at my old job raved about it saying it was the best trick game on the planet.

Who knows?

Cribbage has a very big place in my heart with the hundreds of games of it that I played with my mother when she was alive.  I taught it to my wife but she finds the game a counting exercise. 

I guess I just want to say - game all you want, but sometimes nothing beats a deck of cards.

I taught myself Piquet recently, and have been playing it on the iPad. A pretty cool game considering it's about 500 years old.

Decks of cards keep deployed Marines from shooting each other. Whenever we were in the hurry-up-and-wait-mode, someone broke out the cards for Spades or Hearts. Playing cards was the highlight of many, many, not so good days.

My family used to play Whist during holiday gatherings and what not, kind of like a dumbed down Bridge if I remember correctly. Grandmother taught me how to play Cribbage which I had fun with. Other than that never really did much with standard card games. I do play Tichu however, which can be played with standard cards if you're willing to borrow and mark up a few cards from another deck.

Hour-for-hour, there is no game that is more FUN for me than cards.

Cribbage never really did it for me; I have a board, so now and then I give it a shot,
but never saw much to it. For two, I like Gin better - though it's more a guessing game
with decent players. But, it's the one my mother taught me. :D


Our family was big on Poker and Oh Hell. With Hoyles, I got them to try all sorts of different games
(500 and 3-player bridge probably most popular). At college, I brought home Hearts and Pitch.
Pitch is probably my favorite at this point: it's kinda mind-bending. Ah, and eventually Tri-Corner

Growing up, I played a lot of Spite & Malice with my grandparents. It's still a favorite of ours.

And cribbage with my folks.

My aunts and uncles play bridge. And take it way too seriously for their health.

I remember playing a lot at school, mostly variations that probably didn't exist anywhere else. Those weird card games that seem to exist in small communities that nobody seems to know all the rules to but everyone plays.

I do remember playing a lot of poopiehead or whatever else it is called.
