those are some interesting terrains
I liked the city scape one with the paper skyscrapers
did you make that?  from scratch?
anyway, I hope to prove that 3D boards made from layers of cardboard are superior to all other forms of wargame boards
I will post more pictures of this board I am making as they become available

I wonder what the dice roll modification is for singing at your enemy

F is for Fortress Europa

I dont see how there is any better way.  and even your flat, store-bought game mats have topo lines printed on them, but this way more realistic

anyway, here is what the second board looked like as I was finishing up the road net

A is for Axis and Allies by Avalon Hill

69  Gaming Stuff / Military Games / C-in-C versus GHQ miniatures on: July 13, 2014, 11:01:19 am
Ive bought both but liked the old catalog of GHQ better

of course this was decades ago, before computer based buying

I imagine there is a much better selection nowadays for small lead figures and models

71  Gaming Stuff / Other Games / Re: Chess on: July 13, 2014, 07:11:32 am
yes I am very much the same way... too oppositional to be able to get along with any boss

but maybe if I had conquered this tendency during my young adulthood I would be better off in some ways now

I would certainly be better off financially now, but money is not a very important factor in my life

I will start a wargame-oriented wordgame if you like
73  Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Re: Fleet Series on: July 13, 2014, 07:06:00 am
your review of this games mechanics is so thorough that I need time to digest it

I like the idea of an evasion phase but the idea of only 'activating' a ship or sub once during a game is confusing.  I guess I'd need to look at these rules more closely

thank you for an excellent reply
74  Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Re: Solo - and lots of little breaks on: July 13, 2014, 07:03:02 am
that is exactly how I do wargames myself
leaving the board set-up for a long time allows me to re-evaluate my plans for each side and also to let new ideas for games sink in

and the idea of not being able to smoke whatever I want during a game is laughable
I once had some guy come over to my apartment to play a game and found out he was a police officer wannabe, so I couldnt smoke whatever I wanted during the game
he made me feel uncomfortable in my own apartment
needless to say, I wont be making that mistake ever again

solo is the way to go

plus, I always win the battles!
75  Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Re: the advantages of creating wargame boards from layers of cardboard on: July 12, 2014, 05:29:04 pm
now there were several problems with this first board
I did not cover up the sides of the corrugated cardboard, so the hills looked terrible.  it was a good try but I also wound up planting too many trees
also the process should start from the bottom most layer of cardboard, and with this first board I began at the tops of the hills.  as a result there was some warping between the areas of hilly terrain

so, I set out to improve the idea.
I chose another good location in Pennsylvania and found an excellent topo map of the battle of germantown

here is the first picture of this new board, showing how I used long thin strips of paper to cover up the sides of EACH contour line
