Harlan Ellison is a big fat jerk, but he's the kind of big fat jerk I can respect.

Back in the 80s he was a relatively thin, intense jerk. I also heard him give a talk at a convention at the time. Wow.

No, he's the short one. Asimov's the fat jerk.

Duly noted.

BTW, did you bring up Quark? He probably either (a) forgot about it, or (b) wouldn't want to talk about it, or (c) both.  Grin

Oh, I was way to timid to actually talk to him. Besides, he was on vacation himself and didn't look like it wanted to be bothered.

You obviously don't understand how police operate.

Sadly, true.

I sat next to the actor from Quark (not the character from DS9), Richard Benjamin, for dinner three nights in a row while on vacation in Hawaii.

In the store. Everyday. Preaching to customers. Told them to leave. They just got louder. Cops called. Show up. People in store still being disruptive on private property. Tells me nothing he can do. I go behind counter for my baseball bat and I am told if I touch them I will be arrested.

I just don't understand how that could have happened, because as soon as you asked them to leave, they were clearly trespassing. The cops should have removed them from your premises. I don't excuse that group's behavior (and it was reprehensible for disrupting your business), but the blame falls squarely on the cops on this one.

Did you make a complaint at the local police station?

How are the English translations for their games?

My group are all pretty much card carrying members of the Cult of the New, so we don't replay too many games too often. We have a few favorite fillers that we keep coming back to at the end of the night, but for the most part, we play stuff one or two times and then move on to the latest and greatest. There are a few games we come back to over time, but not many.

It works for us, but I can see it not working for some groups or people.

My wargaming buddy and I tend to repeat play more often. Combat Commander is something we can play for a while. Or Up Front.
8  Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Tweaking Broken Games (A&A 1941) on: July 26, 2014, 01:50:09 pm
So, I picked up Axis & Allies 1941 a few years ago. Played it a couple of times, but it's pretty borked. The economy just doesn't work (most countries could never afford to build one battleship, frex), there aren't enough units fighting, so the few die rolls are very swingy (if you get a few bad rolls, you're done for) and the amount of plastic units was on the low side.

However, my local Target has it on sale right now for $15 so I picked up a second copy. Now there is enough plastic and I figure I can fix the other stuff. My plan is to start by lowering the build cost so players can build a reasonable number of reinforcements. Maybe even have country specific build costs (so Russia gets infantry cheaper than others, Germany has cheaper tanks, Japan has cheaper fighters -- I'm still pondering US and UK).

Now, instead of wasting $30 on the first set, I may end up wasting $45 total, but at least this way, I'll get some fun out of it for a bit.

You publish Cave Evil? Rock on. Love that game. Most thematic game I've played in years.

I have a habit of waking up, immediately grabbing my ipad, checking all my emails and then completely forgetting about them because I'm not really awake yet.

. Mansions of Madness is atmospheric because you have one player that knows the inside details and everyone else is in the dark.

I think that's right. For me, if the design doesn't evoke the circumstances correctly,
it doesn't matter how much flavor text there is going to be, I'm not going to get there.

Even in RPGs, I cut to the chase of the system - ignoring all the poetry and crap

You must have hated 'Tales of the Arabian Nights'.

Not really. The flavor text IS the game.  Well, unless you act it out.

It's probably impossible to act out everything in Tales. Would be fun to watch them try, tho.
12  Gaming Stuff / General Gaming Discussion / Re: Flavor Text on: July 25, 2014, 10:23:03 pm
Reading all the text in Eldritch Horror really helps with the atmosphere. Mansions of Madness is atmospheric because you have one player that knows the inside details and everyone else is in the dark.

Putting flavor text on the Nemo's War cards was mandatory since I could not guarantee the player had read the book recently (or at all) and I needed to give context for the card effect.

Thumbs up for flavor text!

Holy ****, it tracks evaporation! That game is nuttier than I had thought possible. My respect for CNA players has grown.

What fixes are those? I haven't picked this up yet, but it looks interesting.
