Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Re: Phyiscal game or Vassal style play

Physical only.
Never tried VASSAL gaming, but I did look into SFB Online, which is a similar program but specific to SFB. It just didn't click for me.
I've done a few PBEM, but that was with the physical board set up and just exchanging moves in a text file. I was also part of a Diplomacy game that was run through e-mail at our office. We mailed moves in daily and the moderator sent us a JPG with an updated map.
If I want to play on the computer, I want to play a computer game. If I want to play a boardgame, I prefer the physicality.

Five more days for the dots. I thought THEY were a safe way to avoid saying anything bad about anyone. ... Really? Seriously? Dafaq. They have it in for you, man.

Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Re: 'Dead' wargame systems - why does it matter?

I do prefer games that have PDF rules available. My wargame buddy and I don't have a lot of time, so we prefer to spend most of it playing, instead of rules explanations, set up, etc. With a PDF, the player who doesn't own the game can at least read the rules ahead of time to gain some familiarity. (I learn a lot better when I have the components to push around while reading, however, so it's not perfect.)
I'd go as far to say, that if we can't have a PDF of the rules, we probably won't play it. And that is a potential strike against older, dead games.

I like Speed Circuit because it's more a simulation of driving a car. Your speed is scaled and chosen by you. It's also a guessing game between you and the other drivers. This is unlike Formula D where dice determine your movement.
A friend owns Speed Circuit. We've been meaning to try it sometime. The dice in Formula D do control the distance you move, but the non-standard distribution of numbers on those dice gives each player a fair amount of control over their car. Not perfect control, but a game with perfect control and sequential movement would be pretty boring. I never feel that Formula D unfairly penalizes me with randomness. If I make a mistake and crash out in Formula D, it was my fault, not the dice. Also, if I don't win, it usually means I wasn't aggressive enough or didn't take enough chances. The player that pushes their luck the most without getting burned is usually the winner. That works for me.

Whether a game or system is dead is pretty irrelevant to me. The bigger problem is the large number of games published each year that I want, buy, read, punch and stick on the shelf -- without getting played. My unplayed stack is rising faster than I can play games off of it.
I don't even consider whether or not a game is dead when I finally play it.

Historical accuracy isn't something that I care too much about, unless it's egregious. I'm not much of a history buff so the little details escape me. If someone uses a B-17G instead of a B-17H, oh well.
I want games to "feel" right more than anything else.
If I like the topic, I am more than willing to forgive little sins.

Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Rules That You've Completely FUBAR'd

No matter how hard I try, I completely screw up one rule or another every single game. Sometimes in a BIG way.
Playing Cave Evil, only do realize half-way through, after eliminating one player in combat, that each player is supposed to roll dice in combat. We had just been comparing combat values straight up, with no randomness.
In Combat Commander, we started by adding the combat strength of ALL units in the firegroup instead of +1 for each additional attacker. Man, combat was deadly.
I'm fairly certain that I've played more ASL rules wrong than right.
Anyone else?
