The older I get the happier I seem to get. I think it comes from just not really giving a damn about things that are out of my control anymore.
So true. My dad summed that up with the very wise, "Sh*t happens."

They are some of the best looking abstracts games out there.
But the couple of ones that I've played haven't done much for me.

Garfield knocked out RoboRally, Netrunner, Battletech and Jyhad a few years after the debut of MTG. He seemed unstoppable.
Then came Filthy Rich, Rocketville and string of others for years. Yuck. Every game designer must have their Waterloo and Rocketville is it for Garfield.
His King of Tokyo is enjoyable filler.

Only sport I ever was interested in.
That's because its the best sport. I have noticed that boardgamers tend to like baseball more than other sports. Of course, this could only apply to the local gamers here. People who play cRPGs often like it as well. It's because it's a stat driven, turn based game that's more mental than physical. Collectible Role Playing Games? Computer Role Playing Games.

So, what have people been playing recently that is worth talking about?
My short list:
A Study in Emerald Devious scoring. Team game with one winner, but the team with the player with the least points automatically loses. Deck-building and area control. All mixed up with a Sherlock Holmes/Cthulhu mashup. It shouldn't work, but it does.
Heroes of Might & Magic A Polish import based on the computer series. Heroes run around the world, killing monsters for loot and resources, earning skills. But heroes need armies and troops, which cost money. And you need all the money and resources to improve your citadel with new buildings and upgrades. I found the limited number of actions per turn really, really limiting.
Rise of Augustus Literally bingo. With a Roman theme. Long filler, playable with all sorts of gamers. My mom enjoys it, so do my gamer buddies. Has a slight mean streak as some cards have attack abilities. BUT IT'S BINGO.
Thebes Old-classic, but new to me. It had an archeological digging theme. You do some research and then hunt for artifacts to put on museum shows. Digging is done by pulling tiles from various bags, with most bags filled with dirt. Enjoyed this quite a bit. I can see why it is well-regarded.

The Battletech CCG is worth tracking down. It's very combat orientated. In some respects, it is a better design than MTG. You can see Garfield futzing with his Magic ideas to improve the resource management, for example.
The original Star Wars CCG was fun, but if you didn't like Wars, you probably won't like it.

I just picked up Mighty Endeavor, because I liked that it did the whole Battle for Germany thing in the new edition.
For those of us who don't get the reference, what is the whole Battle of German thing? Maybe I have the name wrong. It was an SPI game where one player is the West, the other the Soviets, and both play the Germans facing their opponent. Basically a race to see who gets more of Germany. http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3986/battle-germanyAhhh! I had the name wrong, sorry. I had never heard of Battle for Germany until now, didn't realize it was an SPI game. That sounds neat. I should have just googled it first before asking. The MMP site sums it up pretty well, too. Following the same allocation of responsibilities as the game Battle for Germany (SPI, 1975), one player controls the Western Allies and the East Front Germans while the other controls the Russians and the West Front Germans. The two players compete by seeing which grouping of Allies can conqure as much German territory as possible—while they also play against their opponent to stop the opposite front. Never a dull moment as both players are always playing one side or the other at the same time.

Don't laugh, but the Vampire: The Eternal Struggle CCG had a wonderful political system. It shined best in 4-5 player games. There were decks built around politics and controlling the game outside of combat. Political cards could be played that required everyone to vote and certain characters had more votes than others. Combat decks would have to assassinate politicians or they could find themselves shut down. Is this the one that was originally called Jyhad? We have all of the first edition cards of that stored some d amned place in the house. Awesome game! Yep, that was it. I forgot they changed the name at some point. I think it's the best 3+ player CCG out there. And mostly because of the politics.
