The EA NHL games reached their peak in '94 anyway...

I think I've still got the '95 one for SEGA...the last year you had blood on the ice...good times...
17  Gaming Stuff / General Gaming Discussion / Gaming Related Announcements on: July 25, 2014, 09:49:07 pm
Joining the Designers Notes thread this space is dedicated to announcements of games and game related materials from their creators, fans, etc. No restrictions here. ALL releases are treated equal. A hobby can't stay healthy if it doesn't promote itself.

So post Crowd Funded Projects (Kickstarter, IndieGoGo, etc) - Pxxx - Standard Releases - Start-Ups to Veterans, etc.

I would add that events can go here as well (conventions - charity events - meet-ups) but may spawn its own thread later.

Ok, you know what to do Smiley

NOTE from Admin: I may cull this thread of unnecessary discussion. Try to keep it to the announcements themselves so this can remain a resource

Good deal.

There are so many different things we often don't think about and then you go 'where do I find X?' Hopefully we can build a list of such places. Thinking of editing the first post to have keywords so you can search pages fast for links or just add the links to the first post with a bit of sorting.

I'm recharging today (movies tend to do the trick) so I'll start organizing when the batteries are full Smiley
19  General Category / Site Direction / Re: Galleries - Very Cool Feature on: July 25, 2014, 12:59:52 pm
I've been puttering around with the Gallery feature here (look at the blue menu bar at the top and click on 'Gallery', which is between 'People' and 'Links'). Not only can you upload images, but you can organize them by categories, sub-categories, asssign keywords, etc. You can also upload thumbnail images for each category.

Here's a little prototype I whipped up: my TCS Gallery.

I'm amazed that this site hosts images, given that it's free.

You should start a thread for new folks just pointing out things like this. You seem to enjoy messing around with the place and finding things. Maybe it would entice more to stay and use those features if they are not big on just posting all the time.

I thought that whole thing was a pretty interesting stress test of the non-moderation principle, as practiced here. The flame war was self contained and eventually ran its course. Kudos to the participants for moving on.

Well, that was just only religion though. Just wait until we hit the big time, definition of wargame, Twilight Struggle...

HA!

What little mess there is will be buried in time. If the place lasts,
without breaking its principle of non-moderation, more messes will
come - especially if it grows.

Hey man, even you said religion got too hot Smiley

And no moderation necessary. My mess is mine and I plan on getting it off the screen and leaving the initial post as clarification. I was white hot that day. The worst possible news. For being alive that is. 6 months more of my life and money wasted packing for the fourth time and then being told the DOT had run out of funds...again!

But I'm going to bury my head in this work, new 11 x 17 scanner will be here Monday, I like doing layout old school and have always had problems with things like Photoshop. I'm with learning software like you are with learning rules...a lot of it better come naturally or I'm rantin' and ravin' Cheesy

And my main game table goes back up tomorrow...woot!

From chaos comes entropy, not order.

This is your ship Captain. To allow a free wheel becomes detrimental.

It's time to focus. (And no, I'm not talking about being Thor with a ban hammer Smiley )

My interest lies in design, publishing, theory, modeling. I'm trying to build up something that attracts names. The old school probably won't show. They have lived under the old system their whole lives. But those who try new things may just show up. I'm going after them directly. I have been working on a project that has me gathering information on designers from all over the world.

We are at the point where the hobby grows or the hobby dies. The crowd funding world is dismantling the old ways. Designers don't have to settle for less now. I am working on a series of books whose whole purpose is to grow a new breed of player and designer.

A lot of people are not going to like it but I feel the need to complete these projects and at least try to bring some light back on the subject. My work will be like a Phoenix. Burn the old world to give birth to the new. Gaming is becoming more important every day. Look up gamification if you want to see how important.

There will be those that emulate the old world, but that world is slowly passing. Over the next five years you will see the drop off from pure attrition. Sphere just showed up over at BGG after a 14 month absence. I had begun to wonder myself if he was gone.

This place can be very important. You belittle it and I don't understand why. I tried something like this once. I would have given my testicles to have the results you have here.

I plan on going through and cleaning up my mess here and people can think what they want. A little fire to get things heated up is one thing. But you can't play grab ass forever. They expect this to fail and it will without constant work and vigilance. You have done more than a man's job and now it's time to start shaping the clay.

I know you are going to come back with something about this not being a big deal and how this place will stay small if it stays at all. I would ask you to trust me on this. Big changes are coming.

You can look at the numbers here and see what could benefit from harvesting possibly from other sites. Wargames are doing well, but other genres need attention and they are my weak point but not yours. Your taste in games provides a great start to look for others to come join us.

Chief, you got a great house here that can provide the way forward for both your personal interests and the benefit it can bring to a divided community. Youth wins and that's why I'm going after them. New blood must be found and I'm doing everything in my power to bring it.

I understand if you don't see eye to eye on anything I'm saying. But I'm 50 years old and I made a life out of analyzing trends, data and human nature. I wouldn't be sitting here in this chair now if I didn't get it right at least part of the time.

Now I need a couple weeks to straighten this office up and get all my gear hooked back up and start laying the pavement for a new road. I hope you stick with this. It's the only life raft in what's about to become some choppy seas.

And thank you for reminding me that I need to hook up the inkjets and stir the tanks tomorrow Smiley

I use b&w laser printers for rules and have an Epson photo quality that prints 8.5 x 14 and added a Canon Pixma 11 x 17 for maps (it will print up to 13 x 19 which Amazon stocks...but is expensive).

The cart drying out problem is usually the biggest problem faced and I too have heard that color laser printers have lots of issues. That's why I chose the Pixma.

Picking the right printer is key. The carts are the cost and I always shop for printers by how much carts cost. I can buy refills for the Epson (6 carts) for as little as $6-$8 and the Canon for about the same (5 carts - has two black carts).

I have printed a lot of games and the cost has been a few dollars each. That's paper, ink, full sheet labels and rules.

I'll be adding a third inkjet for production work but I highly rec having at least one of each for the savings when printing b&w rules.

So my copy finally made it in late yesterday. First impression was the map is larger than I thought it was. I was afraid it might feel cramped.

For those unfamiliar with the title and Take Aim Designs:

"Take Aim Designs will specialize in games with the look and feel of the Avalon Hill classics Storm Over Arnhem, Thunder at Cassino, Turning Point: Stalingrad, and Breakout: Normandy, as well more recent releases such as Monty's ****: Market-Garden, Not War But Murder: The Cold Harbor Campaign, Birth of a Legend: Lee and the Seven Days, and Breakthrough: Cambrai. It will also feature books of a historical/military nature.

The company is owned by veteran designer Michael Rinella."

Passed this by Calandale and decided to go ahead and get this up.

The thread is for everyone who designs, wants to start, is looking for materials or resources or has links to share, has a game coming out, looking for play testers, how to publish, etc.

Pass the word. This is for designers of all stripes.

EDIT: I've asked Calandale to pin this so that I can pull links up to this post and keep them organized. Then you can just read through for general information or go straight to the links from here.

Remember, this covers all resources. Places to buy supplies from, play test group links, self publishing guides...anything to help the designer, from hobbyist to pro, to find stuff and to discuss with others topics that pertain to the creation of a game from concept to finished item.
