I like Winners Circle, and Longshot, but I like those mostly for the betting than anything else. I also like Ave Caesar, it is very simple, but I like how it can be cutthroat if you choose to play it that way. I tend towards lighter race games, but I haven't played that many.
2  General Category / Fuck it all / Re: Branded Reviews on: July 16, 2014, 05:53:09 pm
I agree that the branding seems to be getting a little out of hand. I like the dice tower, but there are 487 different people reviewing for them now, and 485 of them suck. I feel that they might be trading quality, for the ability to cover all possible games. I don't think that wanting to review alot of games is bad, but they are all reviewing the same games! I have seen Twilight Struggle reviewed like 4 or 5 times under different people under their banner. To me, that is excessive, and highly unnecessary.

I think #2 isn't mine sweeping, he's just ACTUALLY sweeping! This is why we didn't win in Korea! Stop doing house work, and make with the killing!!

No, he the Army's ace in the hole for the upcoming Army v. Navy Curling Championships

Great! Tell everybody why don't you! Now they know about the secret weapon! Of course, he could be a gardner raking leaves too. There really isn't anything he can't do ( besides talk, move etc.)
4  Gaming Stuff / Other Games / Re: Grand Strategy PC Games on: July 16, 2014, 05:09:11 pm
I used to be obsessed with Civ 2 back in the day. It was the first strategy title that really grabbed me.
5  Gaming Stuff / Other Games / Re: Freedom: The Underground Railroad on: July 16, 2014, 05:06:52 pm
I've only played two 2-player games and we lost both times by a hair. That was also on the easier of the two complexity levels the game offers. It's my experience that the players need to discuss what to do on everyone's turn for the most part. You really do need to work together or you'll lose. So, in answer to your question about getting up and leaving and then coming back for your turn, unless you have the game well in hand I don't think it's a good idea. It doesn't take long to do a player turn.

That's cool. I have been interested in this one, and knowing that you really need to work together makes me want to pick thi sone up even more.
6  Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Medwar Sicily on: July 16, 2014, 05:02:13 pm
Who here has played this one? I have it, and I actually enjoy it for the changes it made to combat, like no CRT. Instead your units strength determines how many dice you get to roll, and infantry hits on a 5-6, with motorized hitting on only a 6. The bucket of dice mechanic has been done before, but I like it here. It's just rolling to see how many hits you get compared to the defending unit, but I liked it in Age of Mythology, and I like it here as well. The only difference being that in Age of Mythology the units you fight with have a rock, paper, scissors style advantage over other units.

I also like that there is no automatic ZOC for units. Infantry has no ZOC iirc, but the motorized units do, so if you have a scattering of infantry, your motorized can just move through unimpeded and wreak havoc. My only real negatives seem to be that the map is pixelated, and while not badly laid out, the colors don't work for me so much. I also think I would have prefered a paper map vs. the thicker stock glossy look. It has ugly creases in it, and without plexi, it is a pain to lay flat.  Also, I'm not sure that I like the fact that I have to stop to engage coastal defense units automatically, when the can't attack, and have no defense. I know they are there to delay my movement inward after landing, but they don't even attack back? Not even a gun battery, or gunner nests? Nothing?
7  Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Re: Solo - and lots of little breaks on: July 16, 2014, 04:45:38 pm
I prefer playing games multi-player, but I do have some solo specific games, as well as co-op games that I play solitaire. There are some of my games that are multi-player, that I PREFER to solo, like Space Hulk:Death Angel, and Medwar Sicily. I just find some games to be MORE enjoyable when I have control over every decision.
8  Gaming Stuff / Military Games / Re: What has happened to BGG Wargaming General Forum on: July 16, 2014, 04:32:34 am
It's not just the Wargames forums either. The geeklists, main forums, and such are becoming annoying as well. I really hate seeing someone get told 50 times over that their dislike of a popular game/expansion/company, is misguided, and if they don't like it, then don't post.

Apparently his OPINION means nothing. I'm glad that BGG has a caste system to remind us all that we are worthless to the hobby.
9  Gaming Stuff / Political Games / Re: Political interactions are among my favorite designs on: July 16, 2014, 04:24:21 am
I haven't played them, but I have heard great things about Founding Fathers, and Die Macher. Isn't Founding Fathers designed by the same guy that did Twilight Struggle?

I don't want online games in my tabletop hobby dammit!!! But yes, it would work well as an online game......I just would probably never play it.
11  General Category / Fuck it all / Re: Why game? on: July 16, 2014, 04:16:35 am
It's like my man Hank Williams said, "I'll never get out of this world alive." World troubles do promote a level of empathy, and worry from me, just not while I game. I don't game to escape, it's just what happens while my mind is occupied by me trying to kill others off in King of Tokyo.

I have only experienced some of his VPG solitaire stuff, but so far I have enjoyed the designs. Zulus on the Ramparts being my favorite. I love that game. The States of Siege games have been a hit for me so far. I have heard that he is inconsistent in terms of quality of games overall though.
14  General Category / Fuck it all / Re: Who are you? Why are you here? on: July 15, 2014, 09:14:11 pm
I played board games growing up, but lost interest in the late 90's when I was in high school. I played magic in middle, and high school, but video games took over as my obsession at that time. As I have gotten older (i'm 31 now), I have pushed away from video games. About a year and a half ago I lost a job I had, so I was looking for an inexpensive form of entertainment (I didn't know then how expensive this could be at that time)  Smiley, found some reviews of board games online, bought a few games on the cheap, and my love of tabletop gaming has come back with a vengeance.

My wife doesn't really understand the appeal, she will play some of the games with me, but mostly she thinks it's strange that the bug has bitten me so hard. I am the type of person who jumps in with both feet when there is something that really grabs me, I guess I have an obsessive personality, but with my other hobbies like comics, sports, and books, I believe there are worse things to be addicted too.

I have followed Calandale to these forums to show some loyalty to a person whose reviews, and analysis of games I respect. Without people like him, Tom Vasel, Joel Eddy, Lance Myxter, and Marco Arnaudo, I might never have gotten back into this great hobby.
15  Gaming Stuff / Sports Games / Re: Baseball Games on: July 15, 2014, 08:53:17 pm
I wouuld probably, literally, end someones life, just for the chance to play a real honest to goodness hockey sim board game. I have had no luck so far in finding a truly great sports board game. I always find them so abstracted, that they make me lose interest due to not being fun enough to be a game, or being real enough to appeal to the massive sports fan in me.
