I am a big fan of chess when not involved in miniature wargames
I favor playing as black, and always use the Caro-Kann opening
while I usually play online, I also do have four chessboards, one of them is quite beautiful laminated oak and walnut, with a lovely staunton plastic set which fits very well
anyone else here a fan of chess?
no, not chests, calen

More of a Go player, although I will play Xiangqi from time to time.

Not too long ago I managed to get myself a copy of "Taliesin: Master Game" so when I get the chance to play an abstract with some one I usually push hard for a game of that.

Example of over-moderation - I moved this out of sessions.

what do those three levels represent?
In terms of decoration the game has a (sci-fi tinged) Celtic/Romano-British mythological theme. It`s pretty but during a game you`re too pre-occupied in figuring out where you can be attacked from to notice it much. They probably represent the battle between good and evil / light and dark or some such. The world sandwiched between Heaven and Hell I suppose. I tend to think of the functionality of the pieces and the rules governing movement between levels though.

I assume so. It`s a chrome veneer on a very interesting game. I started a PBF game of it over on BGG but the other chap had to bail because of a real-world problem. Shame. I`d like to resume or restart with him (or anyone) sometime).

I take it you serve (or served) on the ship in your avatar?

sorry to display my ignorance of your terms, but I assume the PB in PBF stands for 'play by' but have no clue what the final F would mean. and what is BGG? no, I'm afraid I never served in the military. sometimes I wish I had joined the navy when I was younger, it might have given me confidence and pursuitude so sorely lacking in my life were you?

yes I am very much the same way... too oppositional to be able to get along with any boss
but maybe if I had conquered this tendency during my young adulthood I would be better off in some ways now
I would certainly be better off financially now, but money is not a very important factor in my life

I like Chess, but I hardly ever play anymore. Mostly because I suck at it.

I taught our son's Cub Scout pack how to play... I set up six boards and played them six at a time. One of the ill' buggers beat me.

that is really excellent. I love watching kids learn how to play chess I was a chess counselor at three different summer camps in my day and I also enjoy teaching chess around the end of each schoolyear, when there is little to do other than game Ive also taught them very simple wargames, which usually go over very well with the boys at least

Chess is what really got me into games in general. I even played in a few tournaments. But when I discovered wargames, it took a back seat. I still love it but I don't play much anymore.
