I keep coming back to this topic for some reason ...

Does anyone highlight and/or annotate their rulebooks?

I REALLY feel like it'd help me a lot.  GMT games make it easy because you can get PDFs which mean you can do whatever you want to those printouts, but then again ... they release "living rulebook" updates... so you might have to do it again?

In other cases, the rulebooks are exclusively in print and that makes me think twice about it as well.  What if I goof something or later want to sell?

Am I just being too picky?

I keep my hardcopy originals unmarked, but then will load a PDF of the same rulebook into my iPad via GoodReader or Documents and highlight mercilessly.

I mark things up in pencil for errata. Highlighting totally ruins my ability to understand the rules.

I used to highlight my rulebooks, but as Calandale pointed out, it is rather irritating. Whenever I get back to it, I unconsciously only read the highlighted parts, ignoring the rest of the rulebook. Although I do like to make some annotations and things like that, but I would never ever do that with the original rulebooks, only with print-outs. I am super fussy when it comes to my wargames, they are not to be touched by unworthy hands, or ink for that matter!

I NOW HAVE A SYSTEM.
Tah DAH:
I get online, seek out any player summaries and helpful bits.
I d.load and print the rule book (you better provide a f#$%king ) living rule book or else... I scan it and post it on my Google Drive to share.
I then mark up in pencil, I make notes.
If there is no summary I typically write my own, albeit brief, short hand version, not really shareable.

I've tried the PDF on tablet to little avail. I need a physical copy to digest the game. Bravo to those that can do it.
