Amateurs to Arms - working through the vid on rules.

I've played this now three times. Great game. A bit loosey-goosey with the single-deck play, and I really can't stand the coastal raiding rules, but a great game nevertheless. I give a slight, very slight nod towards 'Mr. Madison's War', but A2A is really interesting in its own way. Both are worth seeking out.

Playing killed my mood. Tongue

I find the stories the game seems to generate really interesting. And of course I am only going to play basic rules and/or solo scenarios only. What kind of crazyman wuld try to run all the factions by himself??  Grin

I strongly suggest playing with the main expansion's rules. My first play with
just the basic rules almost convinced me not to bother with the game any
further.

I understand what you're saying, but I wonder if it's best to play some with the basic rules anyway just to get a feel for how to play. To me, at least, building your rocket is hard--really hard. It seems like it helps to start with the basic game, with the simpler rockets first to start to grasp what you are looking for in building your rocket.

Learning the game without someone who knows what they are doing seems problematic (and by "knows what they are doing" I mean more than just knowing the rules inside-out.) On the one hand, as Calandale points out, the base game alone may leave a person disappointed. On the other, playing the full game may just be completely overwhelming.

Thanks both. Ok I will see how it goes. To be honest the living rules are tough to digest even without add ons. They do not seem complex exactly but the style reads very much ... I dunno....like the guy at the game night who has played the game once, teaching you how to play, absently mentioning things that seem very important as he goes on.

I don't get it. Phil never wrote the best rules, but they used to be fairly understandable.
Nowadays, I get no feeling about what the game is even about, until I set it up.

Liberty Roads set up on my table at the moment.  Rules don't seem too complicated at all.  Hoping to maybe do the landings next week at some point.

I don't think you can just sit down and read them and get anything out of them. But if you have the board set up to walk through the rules as you go, they don't seem as bad. If you put the game away for a week, month, etc. after learning it and then come back to it, they seem really good for refreshing your memory and finding any questions you might have quickly.

Washington's Crossing is on my table. A beautiful game with good production values and a nice flow. Give those smaller companies a chance...

Recently also played RAN again. It really has some manageable scenarios that are also fun to replay.
