I have the pocket edition... I just recently picked it up. I had the older minigame back in the early 80s and remembered Ogre being fun.
After playing again, many, many, many years later, it seems that the game is not as fun and cool as I remembered.
It seems, to me, that there is always the same "procedures". Go after the Ogres treads and disable it, then attack it's weaponry. Stopping it first is almost a must because if you stop it from moving, and it is out of all weapons range to the command post, it cannot complete it's mission.
So the game basically boils down to swarming the Ogre, targeting the treads until the Ogre is stopped, then, if it is out of range of the CP, the game is over... no need to destroy the weapons. If one goes after the Ogres weapons first, one may destroy them all before the Ogre gets in range of the CP, but it can still ram the CP. And if one spends all the time to destroy the weapons, there will not be enough time to destroy the treads before the Ogre overruns the CP.
So the game, to me, basically boils down to attacking the treads. So boring and uninspirational.
Thoughts? Comments?

I have only played the game once and that was a couple of months ago. Seems like it would make a nice introductory type game but I didn't find it to be all that enjoyable.

I never thought the game was as good as a lot of people remembered. GEV made it a little more interesting, but still not much value. It was a so-so pocket game. It strikes me as a terrible giant box game.

The base set isn't that interesting. It's almost puzzle like and a real easy to solve puzzle at that.
Adding GEV improves the game, but it's still pretty lite. A good one to introduce to my kids.
I own the big box Ogre and it's hard to get to the table because it _IS_ the table. And hard to transport.

The big box strikes me as a great way to get kids into gaming.
Unfortunately, it costs so much it pretty much means only old-time gamers would pick it up.

I have the big box version. My 5 year old and I are going to get cracking with some basics. He watched me for weeks as I blacked the sides of the vehicles putting them together.
The game is NOT as good as the old Centurion games which were inspired by Ogre but had a FAR superior world and game.
The new game is something to behold in the big box version, but nostalgia is pretty thick with these mega reprints anyway...it's hard to get a good read on what people truly think. I'll suffer through a lot of crap with Mosby's Raiders because I loved the game as a Middle Schooler.
