It's Ameritrash.

Hybrid. There are too many euro mechanisms in it to be pure AT for me.

But, we don't much worry about classifying here. It's clearly a game ABOUT
military stuff (rather than economic or political or whatever), so there's no
need to worry about it sneaking into some 'wargame' category.

It is definitely not a chit style wargame, but like you say has military mechanics with battles and sieges.   I think the hunt/FSP location mechanism is pretty good for what it is trying to mimic.

Overall it is a pretty great game with the event cards/battle cards choices, hunt part, companions and battles/sieges.  A lot of nuances in top play.

Yeah. It may go beyond (as with SPI's WotR) a military focus though. An equally important
factor is, like Axis & Allies, it feels as though it is outside the hobby of wargaming - many
wargamers may enjoy it, but it has more popularity outside the hobby.

But, as mentioned elsewhere, ASL's segmentation opens it to that same kind of criticism.

It's probably the best mix for a Tolkien based game I've seen. I think I still prefer the
ICE Fellowship of the Ring, but that's because it focuses so heavily on the feeling
of the characters' quest. The whole military side is left out of it.

Well for me if it has spells, magic rings, dragons, supernatural soldiery, animated trees, wizards, and an alternate world then the premise is fantasy, and based entirely on fiction.

Not a wargame. Fantasy game -based on or inspired by a novel.

For the life of me, I have never had any idea what advantage some companies or even players ( I am meaning that part based upon a multitude of threads over the years - it is intended as a general statement is all) find in trying to brand their material 'wargames'.

Edited for spacing -I was typing things a bit too fast.

I dunno either. The term has always driven more people AWAY from a game than
enticed, from what I can see.

I don't know about this game as I haven't played it.  But watching Calandale's treatment of "The Fellowship of the Ring" by ICE is a great review.

Fatty Bolger getting lost is one of my favorites!
