Just looked at the CSW news of the new issue. With die-cut counters,
and a very fair price, along with the topics that they cover, I feel this
is a magazine I could get behind. Yeah, I know most of the games have
translations online (or otherwise?), but I want the whole damned magazines
to read at that price.

I guess it's cool that there is a strong non-English gaming community -
but it sucks that it's (at least from my perception) so much better looking
than the English language stuff for the periods they cover.

Have to agree here, but I've heard good things about some of their recent titles (I'm sure the older stuff is good, too), which might be enough to convince me to try some even if I can't read the magazine.

I have signed up for a one year subscription of their magazine, thinking that there actually would be an English version of it (and above that, I messed up and ordered them without the games... Cry ). While I did learn French for eight years in school, not much of that is left. It is a pity, because the magazine's layout is outstanding, and the topics up to date. Besides, for a quarterly magazine, the quality of their games is outstanding! I wonder why Hong Kong and France have such strong wargaming communities, while in other countries outside of America those communities are rather scarce.

They were both occupied during WWII?

There seems to be an Italian nexus growing too. Not just Europa Simulazioni, but at least one other company (Acies).
I think that's all it takes - a small group dedicated to putting things out in a national language.

Vae Victis is a great magazine. It blows the S&T out of the water on the quality of the articles alone. Probably one of the best reasons to learn french.

I really like the "Au fil de l'épée" series. I haven't tried their Nappy series, but it gets a lot of love.

Au fil de l'epee would be a huge attraction for me and VV. Alas, I have never taken the plunge. Oh .... and I cannot speak French of course. Shame on me.   Cry

And the really nifty thing is that there is a focus on battles that are off the beaten path a little bit. At least the English language path.

Which is a big reason why I subscribe to Medieval Warfare magazine. It is in English, but it is published on the continent (Netherlands) and the contributors are from different countries. So you get some interesting subjects and perspectives at times.

The game is the pull for me though. I value magazine articles, but could never subscribe
just for some writing (I think). The last subscription I had for non-gaming stuff was
Omni, in its first couple years. I think maybe my one year sub to Moves came after -
but I was pretty disappointed to get no game in it.

How are the English translations for their games?

I enjoy MW too, and also subscribe to Ancient Warfare. AW also has an excellent accompanying podcast.

Poland has a thriving wargame community.

The publications that I've seen are largely reprints though.

I LOVED OMNI!!! I try to bring this magazine up with people and they just give me strange looks.  Omni was an awesome magazine.  I wonder why it never caught on?
