Ive never heard of dogs who ruin a nice wargame but cats have a different attitude towards table tops
does anyone here besides myself have any funny stories of pets who ruin wargames?
I had a siamese cat once who seemed to delight in waiting for the worst possible moment in a wargame to jump up onto the table, scattering T-72's and BMP's everywhere, knocking out entire companies of mechanized forces just about to jump into the fray.

We are on the furry precipice of getting a cat... I've been reading up on ways to manipulate the cat into hating my game room... Cats are belligerent though and it could backfire... I've made my family well aware that shenanigans with my games by a cat results in a 1 way trip to the vet...

It doesn't have to be that drastic. Velcro (or failing that nails) can solve a lot of problems.

Not me. Ammo is too expensive to waste on a cat.

Feline attrition is why I'm happy the wife and I have dogs. My neighborhood wargaming buddy has a pair of Maine Coons. They're lovely animals, but as a result he can't keep anything set up for more than an afternoon. We played a game of Twilight Struggle (ducks) and one of them attempted a coup of its own in Angola. (At least it was mindful of the defcon restrictions.)

yes from what I understand a maine coon cat could easily take out a pair of ducks that was a humorous story, thank you for sharing and yes, I think youre right... dogs ARE the way to go you can wrassle them and they love to hike and they show respect to your games

My avatar compels me to post.
My cats only bother games when we're actually playing. We just let them have their little walk on the game and then they're done bothering us.
Strangely enough, they don't bother games that are left set up overnight.

If it were impossible to keep the cat away from the games ... yes ... that cat would no longer be welcome at my house. Would I have the vet end it? Yes - if a no-kill shelter wouldn't take it.
I am a fan of animals. I have had pets my whole life. That said, they are animals regardless of how much of a "pet" they become. I value animals far lower than humans and deal accordingly.
The "contract" you make when you get an animal is that you'll be kind to it, treat it well, and when it's in suffering or pain you don't let that condition linger. If an animal isn't a good fit at the house, then you work for a while to fix it ... and then you let it go one way or another starting with the most humane and going down to simply reducing the burden on shelter donations.

I had a friend who lost a copy of Winter War to a cat using it as a litter box. My cats were never terribly motivated regarding games, partly because I was careful about keeping doors shut and training them to stay off tables, and partly because I was just plain lucky. In 27 years of games and cats, there was only one incident of a few Axis & Allies pieces getting knocked about. My little buddy Grendel (now deceased) used to help me playtest...
