One thing I've noticed is that none of the ASL guys I know are solo gamers.  They only ever play face-to-face.  Winning and losing is a big deal to them, and they seem to be more of the mindset that solo gaming is pointless because there's no competition to be won or lost.

I only know about 6 or 7 serious ASL players - though all of them play other games as well - but they are all competitive gamers.  ASL is better as a face-to-face game than solo, so that may be part of it, but these guys don't solo any other games.

Guys in our group who played ASL (but not much of it) were like me (and I played too) largely.

That's funny, because the biggest appeal to me re: ASL is soloing it - either straight solo scenarios, or SASL (which is glorious).

Eventually I do want to get into PBEM VASL - after playing Up Front via PBEM and generating games with upwards of 300 logfiles, I think I have the patience for it.

The community of ASL players is large enough that you find all kinds of people.

You can't substantiate that totally reasonable and logical claim! hehe

The tournament scene is vibrant with its own personalities and folks willing to travel, in some cases, the world over for a top quality game.  That speaks volumes about the group dynamics and intra-community camaraderie.  Not all games have that.  Warmachine, Magic: The Gathering, and Warhammer 40k all come to mind as groups that have serious acrimony and/or bitter distrust full of petty crime.  Again...not ALL players of those games, but the community taken as a whole with regards to its intra-community group dynamics.

Add OCS and a number of other monster games to that list - CSWExpo gets a pretty
decent representation of different nationals making it to the con.

I think the big point in either case has to do with getting something they can't get elsewhere
that is desirable. In highly competitive tournament games, there is a prestige to winning
or doing well. With the monster games, there is simply the desire to actually play face to face
in a relatively condensed time frame.
