Okay, Strat-o-matic is the gorilla here, and there are a bunch of clones,
but what interesting designs are out there?

I remember Pennant Race, the AH game which put you in the shoes
of a GM, running each game off a single die roll. The focus was supposed
to be on the trades and such. Problem is, there wasn't really a system for
the game to go beyond the initial roster - eventually a computer game
(the name eludes me but I played the **** out of it) handled it much better -
well, other than women, robots, and aliens eventually playing.

Baseball Strategy (again AH) felt more like the old video gamess where you
got to select a pitch and choose to swing at it. Couldn't really compete with
those, once they came out.

I remember ads for a game where it looked like you could position the players on the
field, and tracked individual hits by location - well, at least that's what the description
sounded like, it was probably not so impressive.

The only board game one I ever played was the strat-o-matic one. The one computer game I played the hell out of in the late 80s early 90s was Earl Weaver Baseball which, if I remember correctly, allowed you to play out entire seasons rather quickly in one of the provided modes...

If you're looking of the kind of that today ... Out of the Park Baseball is insanely good!

Word up. I probably played through 20-25 seasons with OOTP 6.5 alone. I think 15 is on sale right now for the all star game. It kinda got a bit too detailed for me so I fell out of it.

Back in the 80's I made my own boardgames for both baseball and football. Actually, they were really just spreadsheets and charts. For both games, each player simply picked a play or pitch and dice were rolled on a chart for the results of the interaction. Individual players had a couple of attributes that modified the rolls.

OOTP 15 is a great choice for Pc gaming. It running 20 bucks on steam right now. For the table top I perfer History Maker Baseball by plaay.com. It gives you much more of a story while playing.

Not well known as OOTP is Puresim. I prefer it to Ootp. It gets detailed but doent turn into a micromanagementfest.

For football its FrontOfficeFootball..

And for tabletop theres a pretty damn good remake of Statis Pro football called Football Bones.

I wouuld probably, literally, end someones life, just for the chance to play a real honest to goodness hockey sim board game. I have had no luck so far in finding a truly great sports board game. I always find them so abstracted, that they make me lose interest due to not being fun enough to be a game, or being real enough to appeal to the massive sports fan in me.

Try Out of the Park Baseball.

It's a thousand times better, and the custom leagues you can create push it to the pinnacle of computer sport simulation.

I'm mostly into the old timers in it, so it's fine to play older versions for me.
