The all-out devastation of WWII, and the atomic weaponry, have proven an effective check on warfare on the grand scale.
But, there have been a number of such instances of total war (most notably the 30YW - which puts
the damage of WWII to shame in terms of % loss of civilians) which so horrified humanity that groundrules
for more limited war became the norm. Will we tire of our peacefulness? Will all-out war be truly all out (i.e. nuclear)?

Given the fragile interconnectedness and 'just-in-time' nature of our globalized systems, I'm afraid it wouldn't take much to tip over the apple cart. Massive telecommunications disruption would be almost as devastating to our society as a nuclear attack, at least in the short term.

True enough - such new weapons systems seem bloodless, and so could
be a very attractive attack vector too.

The attack systems would be bloodless, but the ensuing rioting and social disorder wouldn't be. Let's hope it never comes to that.

It would help reduce the population. Something which natural systems would greatly desire.

It would go higher, if global warming wasn't starting cutting into food production.

Life is that way - squeezes into every niche to bursting.

Congrats on leveling up by the way. Been waiting for someone to do so.

Reading an interesting book on galactic/universal depletion as a likely outcome of all that. Tongue

Just give all his posts a Thumbs Down.  Maybe there's a Villain badge?  I think he'd like having that.

The badges are something to explore. I don't even know what they are. Cheesy

Traditional ground-targeted nukes may be obsolete. A few well-placed EMPs can knock out a country just as effectively, without destroying the territory you want to conquer.

The past 70 years, since 1947, has seen the repression of the 'natural order' of the world in favor of this utopian view of how things should be.  All of the world's social issues from that point on have had, arguably, negative impacts on world events.  Everything in this world is being square rooted down to 1.  There are other things to say but I would be labelled something bad.  If moderator would like me to post the other thoughts, then let me know.   Wink
