No matter how hard I try, I completely screw up one rule or another every single game. Sometimes in a BIG way.
Playing Cave Evil, only do realize half-way through, after eliminating one player in combat, that each player is supposed to roll dice in combat. We had just been comparing combat values straight up, with no randomness.
In Combat Commander, we started by adding the combat strength of ALL units in the firegroup instead of +1 for each additional attacker. Man, combat was deadly.
I'm fairly certain that I've played more ASL rules wrong than right.
Anyone else?

Sometimes I find deck management in CDGs a bit tricky. Took a while to get it right while playing 'Paths of Glory', for example. I kept shuffling cards back in at the wrong time.

Navajo Wars for me. Every time I have played it I have got something badly wrong. Its completely not intuitive to me.

But do you like the game? I've been curious about it... It is most definitely like a States of Siege on Steroids, for what its worth. If you enjoy SoS, but want something meatier, more challenging, than Navajo Wars will be great. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about it. I had to get it because of the subject (I'm an American Indian Studies major), and there is definitely a connection to the subject. I'm not sure how strong that connection is though because every time I've played it (which is 4 times now), I'm struggling with the ruleset, so I have never become enthralled in the subject and the narrative. I rated it a 7 on BGG because it sits in the category of "I think its a very good game but I don't want to play it all that often." The game oozes love of the subject matter from Joel. His enthusiasm really comes through and the game is obviously a work of love and dedication. I've just never been able to immerse myself in the history and the narrative, and I am not sure I will ever be able to, because I have a hard time with the rules.

I enjoyed the RCW one (Soviet Dawn), and played Levee En Masse on the iPad (don't enjoy it as much as Soviet Dawn - more repetitive). Didn't know that Navajo Wars had the SoS feel. Now I'm not so sure I'm interested. A little SoS goes a long way. Thanks for the heads up!

Yeah. Maybe too far. Cruel Necessity just didn't make me feel like I was making many decisions from the right perspective at all.

Yeah. Maybe too far. Cruel Necessity just didn't make me feel like I was making many decisions from the right perspective at all. I don't mean to downplay Navajo Wars too much. It has a lot (like, a lot a lot) more going on than your average SoS game. And it does get the perspective right, IMO. It certainly feels like the decisions available to you would be ones you would make as a leader of your family. The AI is handled well also. Its seriously a fantastic design and one I have a lot of respect for, especially because of how well it handles such a sensitive topic. Its just hasn't clicked for me. Not yet anyway.

Good to hear. Sometimes the best ones take a while to click.

I love the COIN games, but I'm miserable with the damn details of each specific action. I mangle...every time...one or more of the actions until I get to a point where I'm looking at the board going ... this can't possibly be right. I screwed up somewhere.
